A Room in Bloom
Delta, BC
Some rooms begin with an architectural feature, others with a beautiful piece of furniture. This bedroom began with a pair of rather bodacious floral cushions.
Our client has a wonderful eye for colour, a love of all things botanical, and a spirited approach to making her home her own. She had already made a fabulous start on her primary bedroom, including a lush green upholstered headboard, but the room needed a little harmony to bring it all together. Those exuberant Designer's Guild cushions were to be the stars of the show, and everything else needed to play a supporting role. Interesting, beautiful, and full of personality, of course, but no competing with the divas!
Our inspiration came, in part, from the remarkable Victorian botanical painter Marianne North, whose unconventional spirit and gloriously colourful paintings reminded us of our client. At a time when flowers were traditionally depicted as isolated specimens, North ventured into the world to paint them in their natural environments, full of life and character. There was something wonderfully rebellious about her approach, and we wanted to capture a little of this same spirit in this room.
With the bold florals and rich green headboard leading the way, the challenge was to introduce layers of pattern without overwhelming the space. A softer, contemporary botanical print was selected for the drapery, its delicate composition holding its own against the more baroque nature of the cushions. A playful plaid bench introduces a little menswear-inspired geometry (every room benefits from a touch of tailoring!), while small-scale patterns in the bedding provide a welcome moment of quiet.
“It has been a wonderful experience working with Francesca and her team. Francesca’s creativity makes each room she works on sing.”

By the window, a comfortable slipcovered chair became one of our favourite corners of the room. Its neutral linen upholstery provides the perfect backdrop for a particularly beautiful embroidered floral cushion, while the botanical drapery filters the natural light to create a soft, inviting place to sit. Sometimes the loveliest moments in a room are the ones that reveal themselves along the way.
The finishing details were equally considered: delicate brass Pooky reading sconces, sculptural blue bedside lamps, warm wooden curtain hardware, and unlacquered brass closet knobs that replaced their rather severe black predecessors. Each small decision contributes to the whole. Beautiful, natural materials were also central to the scheme, with cottons, linens, wools, responsibly considered finishes, and handcrafted wooden elements bringing warmth, texture, and environmental integrity to the space.
Having collaborated with Rene on her home for some time, there is a wonderful freedom in our creative process. Ideas are exchanged, possibilities explored, and nothing is too bold to put forward. The result is not simply a beautifully decorated bedroom, but a room that feels unmistakably hers: colourful, confident, a little unconventional, and full of life.
We believe the best interiors should feel like an extension of the people who inhabit them, spaces that nurture, inspire, and bring joy to everyday living. In Rene's bedroom, that philosophy has blossomed quite literally, one beautiful flower at a time.
